A rifleman kit too fit better into the section mentality. One of your main non-combat job is to slug around extra supplies your squadies. Another AT round, extra medical supplies and enough smokes to support a revival. Kitted with an AR with good range to support/suppress for your teams movements and actions. Not well suited for CQB. But that is the point of playing in sections.
